Villa wedding in Tuscany
Vows in the garden, dinner on the terrace, breakfast by the pool the morning after: a villa chosen for a wedding, not a holiday.
“Villa wedding” covers two quite different things. The historic villas with formal gardens around Florence and Lucca often host weddings but have few bedrooms or none at all: guests arrive for the evening and go back to their hotels. Country villas in Chianti, near Siena and in Val d'Orcia are usually let as a whole for several nights, and the wedding party lives in the house for the weekend. We start by working out which of the two you have in mind. Then we look for houses whose owners accept a wedding, not just a holiday let, match the bedrooms to your guest list and decide early where the dance floor can go without keeping the early sleepers awake.
How we plan a villa wedding
The right kind of villa
A historic villa for one evening or a country house for three or four nights: we settle this first, because it shapes the logistics, the rooming and the pace of the whole wedding.
A rooming plan
We assign rooms by family, keep a bedroom for the bride to get ready and a separate one for the groom, and book places nearby for anyone the house cannot sleep.
Ceremony in the garden, loggia or limonaia
We pick the spot by where the sun sits at ceremony time and how guests walk in from the car park, and keep a covered fallback ready for rain.
Dinner that spares the house
The caterer's kitchen goes into service rooms or a separate tent, and tables and candles are placed so that furniture, floors and painted walls come to no harm.
Dancing away from the bedrooms
The dance floor and sound go where they carry least into the rooms and towards the neighbours, and the finishing time is agreed with the owner in advance.
House rules and set-up days
We agree the day the decorators can arrive, the take-down time, the deposit and which suppliers are allowed, so the morning after is not a scramble.
Tell us about your celebration
Tell us the occasion, the date and the number of guests. We will suggest a format, a venue and vendors, and prepare a fixed written estimate before any work starts.
How a villa wedding differs from a hotel wedding
The place is yours for the weekend
With exclusive use there are no other guests on the property: your people have breakfast by the pool, not in a shared hotel dining room.
Someone's home, not a venue
Many villas hold antique furniture, and the owner or caretaker lives next door. We go through every restriction with them before anything is signed.
Sleep and party under one roof
Grandparents want quiet while friends want the last song. We room guests so that both wishes can live side by side.
Work starts before the ceremony
Tent, flowers and lighting go up a day or two before the wedding, so we count the rental from the first delivery van, not from the first toast.
Villa wedding questions
Can we have a legal wedding at the villa itself?
A legally binding ceremony takes place in a comune hall or in a place the comune has approved for weddings. We check with the villa's comune whether that applies; if not, the villa hosts a symbolic ceremony and the legal part is done separately. Requirements depend on citizenship and are confirmed with the comune and the consulate.
How many guests can a wedding villa sleep?
As a rule only part of the group stays in the house, while everyone comes to dinner. We count the beds room by room, put the rest in hotels and agriturismi nearby and arrange the transfers.
Do we have to rent the villa for a whole week?
Every house sets its own terms, and in high season some are let only by the week. Three or four nights, from arrivals to the farewell brunch, is usually enough for a wedding, and we look for owners who accept that.
Can we bring our own caterer and florist to the villa?
Some villas work only with their own list of caterers and decorators, others accept any supplier on the owner's terms. We find out before the viewing, so you do not fall for a house that cannot take your team.
Villa or exclusive-use hotel: which is better for a wedding?
A hotel brings staff, a reception desk and room cleaning; a villa brings privacy and the feeling of a home of your own. A villa needs more organising, from the kitchen to cleaning to night staff, and that part is ours.
