Same-sex wedding in Tuscany
Two brides or two grooms in a villa garden, among the vines or at a Florence town hall, with straight legal answers.
Tuscany is a natural setting for a same-sex wedding: villas and gardens where your people can gather, mild weather from spring to autumn, and Florence close by. The format, though, is chosen not only for the view but for what you need legally, so that is the first conversation we have. Italian law does not provide marriage for same-sex couples; it provides the civil union (unione civile) under Law 76 of 2016, made by a declaration before a civil registrar and two witnesses. How such a union is treated in your own country is decided only by that country's law. A symbolic ceremony depends on no registry at all, and takes place wherever and however you choose.
What we arrange
Choosing the format
We set out the difference between a symbolic ceremony and a civil union, and help you decide where the legal step belongs: in Italy, at home, or nowhere.
A civil union at the comune
If you choose the unione civile, we agree documents, date and room with the comune and arrange an interpreter if you do not speak Italian.
A symbolic ceremony
Script, vows and a celebrant in your languages. You choose the place: a garden, a vineyard, a terrace above a town.
Venues that welcome you
Before anything is booked we tell the villa owner whose wedding it is, and work only with places that welcome you openly.
A team you feel at ease with
We pick photographers, stylists and musicians for whom your wedding is simply a wedding, and talk through the shoot with them in advance.
The party and your guests
Dinner, dancing, rooms and transfers, so friends and family from different countries can spend as much time with you as they want.
Tell us about your celebration
Tell us the occasion, the date and the number of guests. We will suggest a format, a venue and vendors, and prepare a fixed written estimate before any work starts.
How we work with same-sex couples
No promises on recognition
We never claim that an Italian union will be recognised at home: your own authorities decide that, and we suggest asking them before the ceremony.
Open to foreign couples too
The law lets foreigners enter a union with a certificate of no impediment; where their country will not issue one because it does not recognise same-sex unions, a document proving free status can replace it. We check in advance which one the comune will accept.
Words that fit you
The ceremony text is written around your story, without bride-and-groom templates, in one language or two.
One person to talk to
One coordinator runs the preparation and the day, and the written estimate is ready before work begins.
Questions about a same-sex wedding in Italy
Is same-sex marriage legal in Italy?
Italian law does not provide marriage for same-sex couples. Since Law 76 of 2016 they can enter a civil union, made before a comune's civil registrar in the presence of two witnesses and recorded in the Italian civil status registers.
Can foreigners have a civil union in Italy?
The law allows it. You need a document from your country stating there is no impediment, and if your country will not issue it because it does not recognise same-sex unions, a certificate of free status can take its place. The procedure for couples who do not live in Italy, and the timing, are confirmed with the chosen comune.
Will our Italian civil union be recognised at home?
That depends only on the law of your country, and the answer differs widely. Before choosing a legal format, ask your consulate or your home registry office how a union made in Italy would be treated; we make no promises on behalf of other authorities.
How is a symbolic ceremony different from a civil union?
A symbolic ceremony has no legal force and needs no documents, but you are free to choose the place, the words and the celebrant. Many couples take the legal step wherever it suits them best and hold the ceremony for their people in Tuscany.
Can we have a civil union at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence?
The comune of Florence holds civil unions in the same rooms as weddings, the Sala Rossa of Palazzo Vecchio included, according to its calendar. Date, room and fee are confirmed with the comune's marriage office.
