Palazzo Vecchio wedding: a civil wedding in Florence

A legal ceremony in the city's own historic rooms, from choosing the room and date to walking out into Piazza della Signoria.

A civil wedding in Florence takes place in the city's own rooms. The one set aside for ceremonies is the Hall of Cosimo I in Palazzo Vecchio, known as the Sala Rossa. The comune also opens other places on its own calendar: the Sala di Lorenzo and the Salone dei Cinquecento in the same palace, the Bardini Museum and the Rose Garden. The municipality publishes the rooms, days and hours, and they change from year to year. For a couple living abroad the sequence is: a date with the marriage office (Ufficio Matrimoni), a nulla osta from your consulate, a declaration at the office a few days before, then the ceremony with two witnesses. We work through that chain with you and build the day around it.

What we handle for a Florence town hall wedding

01

Room and date

We match your dates to the comune's calendar, where each room has its own days and hours, and help you request a free slot from the marriage office.

02

Nulla osta and documents

We explain which certificate of no impediment Florence expects for your nationality, where to obtain it and whether it needs legalisation. The final list is confirmed by the comune and your consulate.

03

The visit before the wedding

Under the comune's rules the documents are filed in advance, then the couple makes a declaration at the office by appointment. We plan your arrival so this visit is not rushed.

04

An interpreter

If you do not speak Italian, an interpreter must attend both the declaration and the ceremony, and the office does not provide one. We find the interpreter and check their documents.

05

Getting to Palazzo Vecchio

The centre sits inside the ZTL restricted traffic zone and the palace is in a pedestrian area. We arrange temporary vehicle permits and agree in advance where the couple and guests are dropped off.

06

Photos and the celebration after

We plan portraits in Piazza della Signoria and along the Arno, a lunch or dinner in a palazzo or a hillside villa, and if you wish a symbolic ceremony for all your guests.

Tell us about your celebration

Tell us the occasion, the date and the number of guests. We will suggest a format, a venue and vendors, and prepare a fixed written estimate before any work starts.

What to know about a Sala Rossa wedding

Weekdays, not weekends

Ceremonies in the city's rooms take place mostly on weekdays and weekend slots are scarce. We tell you before you book flights, not after.

A room fee set by the comune

The municipality sets the fee according to the room, the day and where the couple live. It is confirmed at booking and paid directly to the comune.

Monumental rooms have rules

In some rooms the basic set-up is limited to tables and chairs, and any decor of your own needs separate approval. Extra flowers and photography are left to the couple, and that is where we come in.

One coordinator from the first call to the piazza

Documents, emails with the comune and the day itself are handled by one person, so you never repeat your story to a new account manager. The written estimate comes before any work starts.

Questions about a civil wedding in Florence

Can foreigners get married at Palazzo Vecchio?

Yes, the comune of Florence marries foreign citizens who do not live in Italy. You need a nulla osta or the equivalent document from your country, an interpreter if you do not speak Italian, and two witnesses at the ceremony.

How much does the Sala Rossa cost for foreign couples?

The room fee is set by the municipality and depends on the room, the day and where the couple live. The comune publishes the current tariff on its website, and we check it against your date when booking.

What documents do we need to marry in Florence?

The key one is the nulla osta, a declaration of no impediment issued by your country's consular authority in Italy; citizens of some countries, such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland, bring a certificate of capacity to marry instead. Under the comune's rules the documents reach the marriage office at least four days before the date, and the exact list is confirmed with the comune and your consulate.

Can we have a Saturday wedding at the town hall?

Weekend slots are few: the comune's 2026 calendar for the Sala Rossa shows one Saturday afternoon and one Sunday morning a month, none in August, at a higher tariff. Whether such a slot is open to your case is confirmed by the marriage office, so keep a weekday in reserve.

What happens if we have to change the date?

Under the comune's published rules the room fee is refunded only if the booking is cancelled at least 30 days before the ceremony. So we suggest booking the room once documents and flights are settled.
